Stair na Scoile / School History

Gaelscoil Uí Néill first opened its doors in January 1995.  The Naíscoil was situated in the old Fianna Clubhouse in Annagher, which the Fianna Club had kindly donated.  There were 20 children attending Naíscoil daily and 4 began Primary 1 the following September.

For the first 5 years, the Gaelscoil was not receiving Government funding and relied heavily on the kind donations from local people and businesses and on fundraising both here and in America.  As the numbers gradually increased, it became clear that the Fianna premises were too small, and it was then that the committee acquired our current site in Clonoe.  We moved in in September 1999 and were situated in second hand mobiles with three teachers.

The year 2000 brought many changes with a new Principal / teacher being appointed and the long awaited funding from the Department of Education being awarded.  This meant many changes for the school - new equipment in all classrooms, hot school meals for the pupils and new, modern classrooms.  This phase of development was completed in 2003.

At the beginning of 2004 we were delighted to welcome our current Principal Conor on board and in September 2010 our Naíscoil gained statuatory recognition and is now fully-funded by the Department of Education.

When Gaelscoil Uí Néill was established 20 years ago we never imagined that our pupils would have the choice of continuing with Irish-medium education at secondary level which is now available in Scoil Iosaef, Donaghmore and also Coláiste Chaitríona, Armagh.

As we look back over the last 20 years and at the development of our school, we, just like the pupils, parents, staff, members of Cairde Uí Néill, the Board of Governors and our community, are extremely proud of what we have all achieved together - Gaelscoil Uí Néill - Going from Strength to Strength!
